Following a new verbal slip by U.S. President Joe Biden, which has raised concerns among Democrats about his age, his Republican rivals have questioned his memory. Jason Miller, senior advisor to Trump's campaign, stated to Voice of America: "Biden will not be more careful in the election month than before." The political action committee "Make America Great Again," which is associated with former President Donald Trump, also issued a statement saying: "Joe Biden is not only old but has jeopardized our national security." Trump is leading in the Republican primaries and despite facing 91 indictments in various federal and state cases, he is likely to be the party's final nominee. The special prosecutor's report, released by Robert Hur on Thursday morning, mentioned instances where Biden was unable to recall significant moments in his life, including when his son "Beau" passed away. Biden denied forgetting that his son had died and angrily stated: "My memory is good." Beau Biden died in 2015 at the age of 46 from brain cancer. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also described Biden as "the hardest-working and most effective president in modern times." Douglas Wilson, a Democratic strategist, told Voice of America that since many voters are concerned about the age of both Biden and Trump for leadership, emphasizing the president's age and experience is very important. He added that the White House and Democrats should address questions that challenge Biden's mental acuity as "ageism." What do voters say? According to a recent NBC News poll, three-quarters of voters, including half of Democrats, expressed concern about Biden's mental and physical health. In the same poll, less than half of voters were concerned about Trump's mental and physical health. Such diagnoses typically require a series of complex and objective tests that evaluate various areas, including different types of memory, language, executive function, problem-solving, and visual-spatial skills and attention. The issue of "maximum age" for leadership has been more prominent in this year's upcoming U.S. elections. A 2022 poll showed that more than half of Americans, about 58%, believe there should be a maximum age for elected officials, with 39% saying this limit should be 70 years. Casey Brown, an assistant professor of psychology at Georgetown University, says: "Aging does not have a one-size-fits-all formula, and different individuals may have different strengths and weaknesses at different times in their lives." He states that there is no simple answer to the question of what the maximum age for leadership should be. Data show that Americans are living longer. In 2021, there were 89,739 people over the age of 100 in the United States, nearly double the number from twenty years ago. The National Institutes of Health states that older individuals today are healthier than previous generations, indicating that healthy habits can keep individuals active and healthy into their 70s, 80s, and beyond. Donald Trump also took the oath of office at the age of 70 in 2017, making him the second oldest president in the U.S., followed by Ronald Reagan, who was 69 when he assumed the presidency.
