Biden Asks G7 to Support Gaza Ceasefire Negotiations

Jake Sullivan, the White House National Security Advisor, announced on Thursday that Joe Biden, the President of the United States, will ask leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations, currently holding meetings in Italy, to support ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and encourage the extremist group Hamas to accept the Israel-backed proposal. The G7, or Group of Seven, is an informal forum with annual meetings consisting of the United States, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Sullivan told reporters on the sidelines of the G7 leaders' meeting in southern Italy that the world must encourage this Palestinian militia group to accept the proposal and prevent a deadlock. Hamas is one of the groups listed as terrorist by the United States and the European Union. Jake Sullivan stated that Israel supports the ceasefire proposal for the eight-month war in the Gaza Strip, aiming to bridge gaps with Hamas and reach an agreement soon. Hamas welcomed the ceasefire proposal but insists that any agreement must guarantee the end of the war, a demand that Israel continues to reject. Israel described Hamas's response to the new U.S. peace proposal as a 'complete rejection' of the offer. Since the one-week ceasefire in November, repeated efforts to establish a ceasefire have failed, as Hamas insists on a permanent end to the war and a complete withdrawal of Israel from Gaza. Sullivan announced that Hamas has presented a revised proposal, some aspects of which are negotiable, but parts of it do not align with Biden's proposal and UN Security Council resolutions. The White House National Security Advisor added, 'Our goal is to find a way to resolve the remaining disputes and reach an agreement.' According to Sullivan, negotiations with Qatar and Egypt will continue, and these two countries will cooperate with Hamas to reach an agreement as soon as possible. Sullivan emphasized that Israel supports the ceasefire proposal that Biden presented in his speech on May 31 and added that he has not heard any Israeli leader challenge this agreement. He also mentioned that Biden is expected to update G7 leaders on the ceasefire negotiations and how their countries can support this process, highlighting the broader implications of escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon. Sullivan stated that Biden will discuss the 'increased intensity and scope of Hezbollah's attacks deep into Israel, including civilian areas' and added that a ceasefire in Gaza would also contribute to peace in that region. The G7 leaders will also discuss what Jake Sullivan referred to as the 'ongoing threat from Iran.' The National Security Advisor commented on this threat, stating that it relates 'both to Iran's support for proxy forces and to Iran's nuclear program, which we still have serious concerns about.' The meetings of the leaders of the seven largest economies in the world, known as the G7, began on Thursday, June 14, and will continue until next Sunday. Italy is hosting this meeting amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the war between Israel and the extremist group Hamas. In addition to global conflicts, the leaders of the seven largest economies will focus on issues such as the expansion of artificial intelligence, climate change problems, the involvement of some Chinese banks with Russia in circumventing sanctions, and Africa-related issues. The issues related to Africa are significant because the Italian Prime Minister, as the host of the G7, is concerned about uncontrolled migration of refugees from Africa and human trafficking issues. On the first day of this meeting, the leaders of the seven largest economies agreed to provide a $50 billion loan to Ukraine. The cost of this loan will be funded from the profits generated from frozen Russian assets and is intended to assist Ukraine's war efforts. It has also been announced that Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, will sign a bilateral security agreement with the United States and Japan on the sidelines of this meeting. Mr. Zelensky posted on Telegram, stating that he is expecting 'important decisions' at the G7 meeting today, noting that a large part of the meeting will be dedicated to Ukraine, its defensive and economic resistance. Another important topic of discussion at this meeting is how to deal with Chinese banks and small financial institutions that help Moscow circumvent Western sanctions. Western officials have not publicly commented on targeting Chinese banks, but Reuters reported that the United States and other G7 members intend to focus on how to hold these banks accountable. However, immediate sanctions against these banks are not expected to be issued at this meeting.
