Biden Bids Farewell to the American People; 'The Soul of America is at Risk'

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, defended his administration's performance in both domestic policy and foreign relations during his farewell address to the American people, stating that he decided to run for re-election because he felt that 'the soul of America is at risk.' Just hours before this speech, which took place on Wednesday evening, January 26, at the White House, Mr. Biden announced an agreement between Israel and the extremist group Hamas regarding a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages. In his farewell address before handing over power to Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, he said: 'It takes time to feel the impact of the things we have done together, but the seeds have been sown and will grow and flourish for decades to come.' Joe Biden is leaving the White House in a manner he hoped he wouldn't. He initially announced his candidacy for the November 2024 presidential election, but due to physical weakness from old age, he was forced to withdraw from the election and support his vice president, Kamala Harris. However, Ms. Harris was also defeated by Donald Trump in the election. In a letter released just hours before his farewell address, Mr. Biden wrote: 'I ran for president because I believed the soul of America was at risk. Our identity was at risk. And it still is.' In his farewell address, the President warned that a 'super-rich oligarchy' has taken root in this country, threatening the rights of the American people and the future of democracy in the country alongside a group of technology giants. He then called for attention to this 'dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a few super-rich individuals' and stated that without adequate oversight, they would create 'dangerous consequences' for America through 'abuse of power.' Mr. Biden referred to former President Dwight Eisenhower's warning about the rise of a military-industrial complex in America when leaving the White House, saying: 'I am equally concerned about the potential emergence of an industrial-technological complex that may pose real dangers to our country.' Biden's warning comes as Elon Musk, the world's richest man, financially and credibly supported Donald Trump in the upcoming November elections. Additionally, figures like Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Meta, and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, have financially supported Trump's inauguration committee and visited Trump's private club in Florida to meet with him. Biden also called for a constitutional amendment to end the immunity of sitting presidents, referring to last year's Supreme Court decision that supported Trump against criminal charges related to his role in the unrest following the 2020 presidential election. Joe Biden, a Democrat, will leave the White House next Monday and hand over power to Republican Donald Trump for the next four years.
