Biden's Advisor Travels to Israel to Finalize Ceasefire with Hezbollah

Amos Hochstein, senior Middle Eastern advisor to President Joe Biden, announced that he will travel to Israel on Wednesday, November 30, as part of efforts to establish a definitive ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hochstein expressed satisfaction with his recent meetings with Lebanese officials, stating that he is heading to Israel to finalize this ceasefire. On Tuesday, November 29, during his visit to Lebanon, he reported a 'real opportunity' to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. This senior American official, who visited Lebanon, announced at a press conference after meeting with Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, that the reason for his return to the country was the 'real opportunity to end this conflict.' The Lebanese government and Hezbollah, the group supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, agreed to the U.S. peace proposal on Monday, November 28. Hochstein cited 'facilitating decision-making' as the reason for his presence in Beirut and expressed hope for a decisive decision regarding the current 'open window' available. Hezbollah began its unilateral rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel one day after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7. In response, Israel conducted severe attacks against the positions of this group in Lebanon and Syria, killing hundreds of members of this major proxy arm of the Iranian government in the region, including its leader and senior military commanders such as Hassan Nasrallah, Foad Shakir, Ibrahim Aqil, and Hashem Safi al-Din. Simultaneously, Israel has sent ground forces to parts of southern Lebanon amid heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah positions, resulting in over 1.2 million Lebanese being displaced due to the ongoing conflict. Several countries, including the U.S., Israel, Germany, Serbia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Australia, have recognized Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
