Biden's Envoy Sent to the Middle East; U.S. Works to Reduce Tensions Between Israel and Hezbollah

U.S. President Joe Biden has dispatched Amos Hochstein, senior advisor to the U.S. Department of State on energy security, as his special envoy to the region with the aim of reducing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to the Times of Israel, Hochstein is expected to arrive in Israel late on Thursday, January 4. A senior Biden administration official told reporters on Wednesday, January 3, that Hochstein recently met with Abdullah Bou Habib, Lebanon's foreign minister, and the U.S. is pursuing diplomatic efforts to help alleviate some of the tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. He did not provide further details on this matter. In this context, Israel's Kan television reported on Wednesday that Israeli officials intend to tell Hochstein that without a diplomatic agreement to distance Hezbollah from the border of the two countries, they cannot allow residents of northern cities to return home. Additionally, according to a report published on the Walla website, Israel hopes that this agreement will lead to discussions about establishing an official border with Lebanon that includes a ceasefire line. Hochstein's trip comes two days after Saleh al-Arouri, a leader of the Hamas militant group, was killed in a drone strike attributed to Israel at a Hezbollah base in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon's capital. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its role in the attack, but this action occurred a month after Kan aired comments from the head of Shin Bet, the country's internal security agency, promising to hunt down Hamas leaders in Lebanon, Turkey, and Qatar, even if it takes years. Meanwhile, Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary-general of the Iran-backed group, stated that the killing of Saleh al-Arouri would not go unanswered. Hezbollah and its allied Palestinian militant groups have engaged in daily border clashes with Israeli soldiers along the border in support of Hamas since the Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7. As a result of rocket fire from Lebanese territory, tens of thousands of people in Israel have been evacuated from border cities. Hezbollah is designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the U.K., and Israel. The Times of Israel reported that the killing of Saleh al-Arouri has raised concerns about an escalation of hostilities, as he was the most significant Hamas member killed since the group's attack on October 7. Meanwhile, the publication noted that a senior Biden administration official stated that Washington does not believe Hezbollah is seeking to fully open a new front against Israel following the killing of Saleh al-Arouri.
