Bipartisan Senate Bill to Intensify Penalties on Commercial Vessels Violating U.S. Sanctions

Republican Senator James Lankford, along with Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan, has called for intensified penalties on "violating commercial vessels" circumventing sanctions against the Islamic Republic and Russia in a bipartisan bill approved by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. According to a statement from Senator Lankford's office on Monday, this bipartisan initiative aims to address vessels that turn off or manipulate GPS devices to evade international sanctions, including those imposed on the Islamic Republic and Russia. For this bill to become law, it must be approved by the Senate floor and then voted on in the House of Representatives after passing the committee. The statement from Senator Lankford's office cites investigations by the "New York Times," indicating that these vessels "especially regarding shipments of sanctioned oil from Russia and the Islamic Republic" disable their tracking devices to conceal their activities and evade U.S. sanctions. Concurrently with the "Vessel Tracking for Sanctions Enforcement" initiative proposed and approved by Lankford and Hassan, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is launching a pilot program to support this initiative. Advanced data analysis will be utilized to "identify vessels" that assist "foreign adversaries." While the senators emphasize the importance of preventing illegal shipments and effectively enforcing sanctions, previous initiatives by Lankford against the Islamic Republic's global activities were also highlighted. Earlier, James Lankford had issued statements regarding "secret negotiations with the Islamic Republic," "nuclear weapon acquisition," "activating the snapback mechanism," "condemning the harassment of Iranian women," and "designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization."
