Bipartisan Senate Proposal for the Release of American Journalist Imprisoned in Russia

Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee introduced a proposal on Friday, October 29, for the immediate release of Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, from Russia. He was arrested six months ago on charges of espionage, which could lead to a 20-year prison sentence. The draft of this proposal has the support of 27 out of a total of 100 U.S. senators and draws attention to the continued detention of 32-year-old Gershkovich. A Moscow court has rejected this journalist's appeal for pre-trial detention. Senator Ben Cardin, the Democratic chair of the committee, stated, "Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, has been detained in Russia solely for doing his job of reporting the facts and clarifying President Putin's rationale for his illegal war against Ukraine." Senior Republican Senator Jim Risch also remarked, "Press freedom is vital for holding governments accountable worldwide." Gershkovich has been in prison since April 1, when he was arrested in Yekaterinburg, about two thousand kilometers east of Moscow, while traveling to report. Russia claims this journalist was arrested "while committing a crime" in Yekaterinburg. The Russian Federal Security Service alleges that this journalist was attempting to obtain military secrets but has not provided evidence to support its claims. Gershkovich is the first American journalist to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the Cold War ended. The Wall Street Journal has denied the charges and called for the immediate release of their "trusted and dedicated journalist." The newspaper stated that his arrest is a "malicious insult to a free press and should provoke outrage from all free people and governments around the world." The U.S. has accused Russia of "hostage diplomacy." Relations between Russia and the U.S. have reached their lowest point in over 60 years since the Ukraine war. Analysts say Moscow may use imprisoned Americans as bargaining chips. At least two American citizens who have been detained in Russia in recent years have been exchanged for Russians imprisoned in the U.S. The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously stated that it will only consider exchanging Gershkovich if a verdict is issued in his trial. In Russia, trials for espionage charges can take over a year.
