Blinken: American Weapons Help Stabilize Frontline in Ukraine

As news emerged of the destruction of 13 Russian drones by Ukrainian defense forces, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that American weapons sent to Kyiv help to "stabilize the frontline" in Ukraine amid escalating Russian attacks, and Washington will "adapt and adjust" its support according to the conditions of the war. Blinken, who traveled to Chișinău, the capital of Moldova, emphasized the need for strengthened support for Kyiv from NATO allies and neighboring countries during a meeting with President Maia Sandu. This comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Monday, June 27, that NATO members in Europe are essentially playing with fire by allowing Ukraine to attack Russian territory using Western weapons, which could lead to a "global conflict." The United States has stressed that it does not encourage Ukraine to use American weapons for "direct attacks" on Russia, but Blinken, at a press conference in Moldova, commented on Washington's current position on the matter, stating: "The nature of the battlefield has changed over the past two years. As the locations and equipment that Russia uses in this war change, U.S. policy will be adapted and adjusted." The United States, the largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine, approved a $61 billion aid package on April 24 after months of delay. According to Antony Blinken, U.S. arms logistics now have a "real effect" and Putin has failed to achieve his objectives in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine. In the third year of the deadliest war in Europe since World War II, as Western countries explore ways to prevent the advance of the Russian army in Ukraine, Putin repeatedly warns of another world war, but Western countries consider this likelihood minimal. Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, recently stated in an interview with The Economist that member countries of this military alliance should allow Ukraine to attack deep into Russian territory with Western weapons, a view supported by some European NATO members, but not by the United States.
