Blinken Arrives in Ukraine on Unannounced Visit

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, arrived in the capital of Ukraine on Wednesday, September 6, on an unannounced visit. The purpose of this trip is to demonstrate continued U.S. support for Ukraine's efforts to counter the Russian invasion. Ukraine is in a difficult phase of its counteroffensive to reclaim its occupied territories from Russia. The U.S. Secretary of State arrived in the city just hours after a Russian missile attack on the capital of Ukraine. The U.S. State Department has stated that Blinken will meet and discuss with senior Ukrainian officials during his two-day visit and will emphasize America's commitment to Ukraine, which is engaged in a tough war with its larger neighbor. During this trip, Blinken will meet with the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister of Ukraine. The U.S. Secretary of State said, "We have seen good progress in Ukraine's counteroffensive," and Washington wants to ensure that Ukraine gets what it needs to succeed in the counteroffensive. A senior State Department official told reporters that Blinken is likely to announce a new package of U.S. aid worth over one billion dollars. Just hours before Blinken's arrival in Ukraine, Russia conducted airstrikes on Kyiv and the southern Odesa region of Ukraine.
