Blinken Calls for Increased Humanitarian Aid for Gaza Civilians

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, announced early Wednesday, November 1, that in a phone conversation with Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, he called for a faster and increased distribution of humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip. Mr. Blinken also wrote on the platform 'X' that in an effort to protect U.S. citizens, he asked Mr. Herzog to prevent the escalation of the war. The United States, Britain, and the European Union have emphasized support for Israel's right to defend itself following the October 7 attack by Palestinian militants on Israel, which left 1,400 dead. They also called for the immediate release of hostages, as well as the protection of Palestinian civilians living in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid to them. The White House expressed confidence on Tuesday, October 31, that Israel is trying to minimize civilian casualties in its attacks on Gaza. This comes as rising civilian casualties in Gaza have raised concerns among international relief organizations. John Kirby, the Strategic Communications Coordinator for the National Security Council at the White House, stated that the U.S. is aware that thousands of civilians in Gaza have been killed and injured, and the infrastructure in the area has been damaged by shelling. He continued that the killing of civilians is not Israel's military objective, adding, 'I do not deny that this is happening; it is indeed tragic, but the goal of Israeli forces is not to drive out and deliberately kill innocent civilians, and they have tried to minimize harm to civilians.' The militant group Hamas, which is supported by the Islamic Republic, governs Gaza. The U.S., the European Union, Japan, and Israel have designated the militant group Hamas as a terrorist organization.
