Blinken Criticizes China's 'Escalatory and Illegal Actions' at ASEAN Meeting

On Saturday, August 6, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Beijing's 'escalatory and illegal actions' in the South China Sea during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. Blinken specifically condemned the hostile actions of the Chinese Coast Guard against the Philippines but praised the diplomacy between the two neighboring countries following the conclusion of the Philippines' logistical mission in a disputed area and China's non-interference in this regard. The U.S. Secretary of State, along with his counterparts from Russia, China, Australia, and the European Union, attended a regional meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) focused on security, where topics such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, North Korea's nuclear ambitions, and tensions in the South China Sea were discussed. During his meeting with Wang Yi, held on the sidelines of this gathering, Blinken expressed concerns about Beijing's recent 'provocative actions,' including a simulation of a blockade of Taiwan coinciding with the inauguration of Lai Ching-te, the new president of Taiwan. The U.S. and Chinese foreign ministers also agreed on the continuation of military relations between the two countries. Blinken criticized China's support for Russia's military industries and warned that if Beijing does not address Europe's concerns in this regard, the United States will continue to take appropriate actions and impose further sanctions on Chinese companies. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on the sidelines of the meeting, claimed that U.S. guidelines regarding the management of nuclear assets in the Korean Peninsula increase security concerns in the region. He did not mention North Korea's support for Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the use of Russian forces of weapons made in Pyongyang to target civilian areas in Ukraine, claiming that U.S. deterrent actions in the region escalate tensions. Regarding the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, Blinken stated that the United States is 'intensely' working every day to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and find a way to ensure lasting peace and security. Prior to Blinken, the Indonesian foreign minister also stated that the need for lasting peace is an urgent matter and that the international community must address the current humanitarian situation in Gaza. Penny Wong, the Australian foreign minister, in her speech, urged Myanmar's military rulers to choose a different path and end the civil war in the country. According to her, the situation in Myanmar is unstable, and the military and the people will not be able to endure it in the long term. In Myanmar's civil war, on one side is the equipped military of the country, and on the other side is a loose coalition of ethnic groups and armed resistance movements. The ruling military in Myanmar ignores peace efforts, and ASEAN's attempts to persuade both sides to initiate peace negotiations have not been successful. On Saturday, ASEAN issued a statement once again calling for an end to violence against civilians and the initiation of peace talks. So far, 2.6 million Myanmar citizens have been displaced as a result of the civil war in the country. Charges have been filed against a North Korean hacker for cyberattacks on U.S. medical and military facilities. China halted nuclear weapons negotiations with Washington following the sale of arms from the U.S. to Taiwan. The U.S. Secretary of State discussed China's escalatory actions in the South China Sea with his Filipino counterpart. The U.S. urged China and Russia not to entrust nuclear weapons control to 'artificial intelligence.' The Japanese Prime Minister told American lawmakers that U.S. leadership in global affairs is 'essential.' A joint military exercise by the U.S., Japan, Australia, and the Philippines was conducted to support freedom of navigation.
