Blinken Emphasizes the Need for Post-War Planning in Gaza

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the necessity of planning for the post-war period in Gaza during a meeting on Monday with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. He called for ensuring a reduction of tensions with Hezbollah along Israel's northern borders and preventing the escalation of conflicts. The U.S. State Department stated after the meeting: "He [Blinken] briefed the Israeli Defense Minister on the latest diplomatic efforts to restore security, sovereignty, and reconstruction in Gaza in the post-war period and stressed the importance of these actions for Israel's security." Washington has repeatedly urged Israel to develop a realistic plan for the post-war period in Gaza, warning that the absence of such a plan could lead to lawlessness and chaos, as well as the resurgence of the extremist group Hamas in Palestinian territories. Gallant's trip to Washington was for vital discussions about the future of the war with the Biden administration. Palestinians have previously asserted that only ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state can create peace. The U.S. State Department added: "He also emphasized the importance of avoiding exacerbating this war and achieving a diplomatic solution that allows both Israeli and Lebanese families to return to their homes." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that with the end of the current phase of the war in Gaza, Israel could deploy more forces along its northern border with Lebanon, raising alarms about the potential expansion of the war into Lebanon. About three weeks ago, Hezbollah targeted Israeli cities and military positions with its largest rocket and drone attacks to date following an Israeli airstrike that killed one of the group's senior commanders. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, warned last week that in the event of an all-out war between the two sides, "there will be no safe place in Israel." Over the eight months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which runs parallel to the Gaza war, more than 400 people in Lebanon, including 70 civilians, have been killed. Israel has also reported 26 fatalities, 10 of whom were civilians.
