Blinken is the first US Secretary of State to visit China in the past five years. The senior US diplomat stated that he discussed the 'need to reduce the risk of misperception and miscalculation' with his Chinese counterpart. He tweeted images from the meeting, mentioning that they discussed how to responsibly manage relations between the two countries through open communication channels. Chinese state media reported that the Chinese Foreign Minister told Blinken that the Taiwan issue is 'the core of China's interests, the most important issue in China-US relations, and the most prominent risk.' Prior to this meeting, US officials had deemed it unlikely that any significant breakthroughs would occur regarding major disputes, including trade, US efforts to hold back China's semiconductor industry, the Taiwan situation, Beijing's assertiveness in the South China Sea, and human rights issues in China.
