Blinken in Qatar: Palestinians Must Be Able to Return Home After the War

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, stated in a press conference in Doha on Sunday, January 7, that during his visit to Israel this week, he will tell Israeli officials that it is essential to take further measures to prevent civilian casualties in Gaza. Blinken also mentioned that Palestinian civilians should be able to return to their homes after the war and should not be pressured to leave Gaza. The U.S. Secretary of State added that the killing of journalists from Al Jazeera in Gaza is an 'unimaginable tragedy' and that many journalists are being killed in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Qatar stated that the killing of a Hamas leader in Beirut complicates negotiations for the release of hostages in Gaza. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that the killing of one of the Hamas leaders in an Israeli drone strike in Beirut last week has impacted Doha's ability to mediate between the group and Israel regarding the release of hostages and efforts to establish a ceasefire. Saleh al-Arouri, a Hamas leader in Beirut, was killed in the drone strike attributed to Israel on Tuesday, January 2, but Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its role in the attack. The Prime Minister of Qatar emphasized that his country will continue its efforts in this regard. He referred to the attacks by the Houthis in Yemen, supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, stating that creating tensions in maritime routes in the Red Sea is 'unacceptable' and has a negative impact on the war in Gaza. The Iranian-backed Houthis announced that they would target commercial ships in the Red Sea until Israel ends its war with Hamas in Gaza, and according to U.S. officials, they have since targeted at least 25 commercial vessels, disrupting international trade. However, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, reiterated on Sunday, January 7, that the war in Gaza should not stop until 'all its objectives are achieved.' He stated that these objectives include eliminating Hamas, returning all hostages, and ensuring that Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel. The Times of Israel reported that Netanyahu said, 'I say this to both our enemies and our friends. This is our responsibility, and this is a commitment for all of us.' Netanyahu also warned Hezbollah in Lebanon, saying, 'I suggest to Hezbollah to learn from what Hamas has learned in recent months: 'No terrorist will be safe.' Both Hamas and Hezbollah, which are armed and financially supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, are listed as terrorist organizations by various countries. Since the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 and Israel's retaliatory response, Hezbollah has repeatedly attacked Israeli territory, which Israel has responded to with airstrikes against Hezbollah.
