Blinken: Iran Risks Its Interests with Further Attacks on Israel

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, stated on Thursday, October 25, in Doha, Qatar, that he hopes Iran has received a clear message that any further attacks on Israel would fundamentally jeopardize its interests. This comes as the region awaits Israel's retaliation for Iran's missile attack on October 1. Blinken emphasized that the United States is working with its partners to inform Tehran, either directly or indirectly, that further attacks on Israel would have very negative consequences for Iran's interests. He noted that the risk of escalation is very high, prompting the U.S. to work more seriously and decisively to prevent it. Blinken also mentioned that the U.S. is closely coordinating with Israel to take necessary actions to prevent further Iranian aggressions and ensure that any response to these attacks does not lead to an endless cycle of escalating tensions. While speaking in Doha, Blinken did not comment on Israel's planned response to the October 1 missile attack by Iran. According to CNN, Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have assured the U.S. that any retaliatory strike on Iran will be limited to military targets and will not include oil or nuclear facilities. In another part of his remarks, Blinken expressed that the U.S. does not want Israel's operations in Lebanon to extend. This comes a month after Israel's military action against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group. He predicted that a meeting between negotiators would take place in the coming days to resume discussions on a ceasefire in Gaza. Senior diplomats from Qatar and Washington announced that American and Israeli negotiators will gather in Doha to facilitate the resumption of negotiations for a ceasefire agreement that also includes the release of hostages in Gaza. Blinken, after discussions with Qatar's Prime Minister, stated that it is still unclear whether the extremist group Hamas is ready to participate in new negotiations, but he urged them to do so. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the European Union. This is Blinken's first visit to the region since the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, by Israel, who was the architect of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel that sparked conflict across the Middle East. Washington hopes that his death could serve as a motivation to end the war. Israel's attack on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon was aimed at ensuring the return of tens of thousands of people who had been evacuated from their homes in northern Israel during a year of border conflict with Hezbollah. Blinken stated, 'While Israel is conducting operations to mitigate threats to itself and its people along the border with Lebanon, we have made it very clear that this should not lead to a prolonged operation.' He added, 'Israel must take necessary actions to prevent civilian casualties and endanger UN peacekeepers or Lebanese armed forces.'
