Blinken: Iran's Government Should Focus on Domestic Development Instead of Regional Conflicts

The U.S. Secretary of State stated that 2024 has been a tough year for the Islamic Republic, urging the Iranian government to shift its focus from regional conflicts to internal development. Antony Blinken, speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Wednesday, December 19, emphasized that 'the Iranian regime must refrain from getting involved in unfortunate events throughout the region and beyond.' In another part of his remarks regarding developments in the Middle East, he praised Israel for achieving significant military objectives in Gaza, including dismantling Hamas's military capabilities and eliminating key leaders responsible for the 'October 7 attacks.' However, he warned that maintaining these achievements requires translating battlefield victories into political successes, stating, 'Now is the time to transition conditions to a point where Israel does not have to bear the burden of Gaza.' According to a portion of Blinken's remarks reported by Reuters, he warned that if Israel remains involved in managing the Gaza Strip after securing the remaining hostages held by Hamas, it may face years of armed insurgency. The Biden administration's Secretary of State further stressed the need to establish a governing structure in Gaza that prevents the Iran-backed Hamas from regaining power and also relieves Israel of direct responsibility in the region. Regarding Lebanon, Blinken referred to progress in pushing back Hezbollah, describing this achievement as an 'extraordinary opportunity' that has allowed displaced Israelis in the north and displaced Lebanese in southern Lebanon to return to their homes. He stated that this is a moment to consolidate achievements and support stability in Lebanon. Blinken also pointed to the rise of Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen, noting that their military capabilities have reached a level that they are openly utilizing. He expressed concern that this group, which claims its missile strikes are in support of the Palestinians, may continue its aggressive actions even after the conflict in Gaza is resolved. The U.S. Secretary of State noted that the Houthis have positioned themselves on the global stage and may persist in their actions. In discussing Syria, Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of preventing the return of ISIS and praised past efforts to eliminate the group. He advised Donald Trump, the next U.S. President, that continued support for local partners and broader reconstruction efforts is necessary to achieve long-term stability in the region. In discussing the growing alliances among America's adversaries like Russia, North Korea, and the Islamic Republic, Blinken described these alliances as 'marriages of convenience,' stating, 'But that does not make them less dangerous.'
