Blinken: We Will Respond Decisively If Iran's Proxies Attack US Interests

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, stated in an interview with NBC News that there is a possibility of escalating tensions from the Islamic Republic, but "if Iran's proxy forces attack U.S. interests in the region, they will face a decisive response." In response to a question regarding recent attacks on U.S. facilities in the region, Blinken said, "We are concerned. In fact, we expect that there is a possibility of escalation from Iran's proxy forces against our troops and personnel in the region. We are taking steps to ensure that we can effectively defend our people and respond decisively if necessary." The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized that the Biden administration does not want escalation or the opening of a second or third front in the region, but if "we witness an attack on our troops and personnel, we are prepared for that." Blinken noted that Israel shares this view and does not want a second front to open amid the war with Hamas. He said, "No one wants a second or third front, especially when it comes to Lebanon. It is not in anyone's interest, and we are precisely trying to send a very strong deterrent message to Hezbollah in Lebanon and more directly to Iran to refrain from opening a second front." Blinken referred to recent statements by President Joe Biden, who warned that no one should "exploit this situation." He also described the goal of strengthening U.S. military forces in the region as deterrence, adding, "To make it clear that if anyone tries to do something, we are there. Therefore, our expectation and Israel's is that no one seeks to open a second front." Lloyd Austin, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, also stated on Sunday, October 22, regarding the Israel-Hamas war that the United States will take "appropriate actions" in response to any escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Just hours after the Pentagon announced an increase in military presence in the region, he said, "We advise any group or country seeking to escalate the conflict and exploit this very unfortunate situation not to do so." Austin warned, "We reserve the right to defend ourselves and will not hesitate to take appropriate action."
