Bloody Clashes in Jenin Camp; Escalation of Tensions Among Palestinian Groups

Recent reports indicate that several people have been killed in the recent clashes between Palestinian groups in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Among the dead are at least one member of the Islamic Jihad group and three security personnel, including an officer from the Palestinian Authority's intelligence unit. According to the Associated Press, security forces of the Palestinian Authority have deployed armored vehicles and personnel carriers in the streets of Jenin and have reportedly taken over part of a hospital, using it as a stronghold in street battles. Palestinian security agencies have stated that around 50 people have been arrested during this operation. At least two civilians have also been killed and several others injured. The Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the occupied West Bank, began armed operations about two weeks ago to confront Palestinian militants in the Jenin refugee camp. According to Brigadier General Anwar Rajab, spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority's security forces, the aim of this operation is to restore order and security, which has long been a center of activity for extremist Palestinian groups. He added that Palestinian security forces are focused on 'eradicating Iranian-backed groups that seek to incite chaos.' Palestinian security officials have stated that this operation will only cease when its objectives are met. The Associated Press reported that the Palestinian Authority aims to establish its sovereignty over this tense area in the West Bank to present itself as a capable force for managing Gaza after the war ends. Under the influence of these clashes, UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, has been forced to suspend its activities, including schools. These clashes have disrupted Palestinians' access to essential services such as drinking water and health care and delayed the reconstruction of what was damaged during Israeli army attacks on the Jenin camp. The residents of the Jenin refugee camp are second and third generations of families who were displaced from their homes on the eve of the establishment of Israel in 1948. This camp has always been one of the main centers for the growth and formation of armed Palestinian groups and resistance against Israel. The extremist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad operate freely in this camp, and their posters, including images of the deceased from both groups, are displayed on the walls. The Palestinian Authority, which administers the West Bank based on a temporary peace agreement between the two sides in the 1990s, has little presence and control in areas like the Jenin camp. The refugee camp and the city of Jenin have long been targets of repeated Israeli army attacks, and the intensification of these attacks since the start of the war in Gaza has resulted in dozens of deaths and severe damage. Palestinian health agencies report that over 800 Palestinians have been killed due to Israeli attacks in the West Bank since mid-October of last year. Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, is considering an agreement with Hamas to form a specialized, non-political committee to manage Gaza after the war, although this committee will operate under his supervision. The U.S. government has invested years in training and equipping the Palestinian Authority's security forces, considering them the best alternative to Hamas in Gaza. However, the Israeli government opposes this plan, believing that the Palestinian Authority cannot contain Hamas. Therefore, it insists that even after the war ends, the security management of Gaza will remain under Israeli control. The future U.S. administration has not yet announced its policy regarding the future of Gaza, but Donald Trump was a staunch supporter of the Israeli government during his first term in office.
