Boehner: Republicans Determined to Fight Against Iran Deal

John Boehner, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, stated on Thursday, September 10, that Republicans are determined to fight the nuclear agreement with Iran, regardless of how the House and Senate vote this week. According to Reuters, he told reporters that Republicans will use "every tool" to stop the agreement reached on July 14 between Iran and six world powers and to delay its implementation. Boehner emphasized that House members have reserved the right to return to their main strategy for voting on the resolution to reject the agreement. Members of the U.S. Senate are currently speaking about their reasons for supporting or opposing the Iran nuclear deal. The Senate is expected to vote on the agreement Thursday evening. Democrats are confident that they have enough votes to prevent Republicans from rejecting the agreement. According to the Associated Press, a successful outcome for Democrats in this regard would be a significant victory for the Obama administration on one of its foreign policy priorities, while Republicans are unanimously opposed to it. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, has asked his Democratic colleagues not to use procedural tactics to block the final stage of the resolution to reject the agreement. However, Democrats have stated that they will use these tools. On the other hand, House Republicans, realizing that the Senate will likely block the resolution to reject the Iran agreement, have stopped working on it. They have turned to other options with the aim of obstructing the implementation of the mentioned agreement, but it seems that these actions will not lead to any results. Under the Vienna nuclear agreement, Iran agreed to suspend much of its nuclear program in exchange for a reduction or lifting of international sanctions against Tehran. The Obama administration claims that this agreement will prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and if Iran cheats, the lifted sanctions will be reinstated. Meanwhile, opponents of the agreement, especially among Republicans, emphasize that the possibility of reinstating sanctions does not exist and that with the implementation of the Vienna agreement, billions of dollars will be made available to Iran, which will be used to fund terrorist groups and the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
