Bolton: We are ready to increase pressure on Iran if necessary

The National Security Advisor of the White House emphasized on Tuesday that the United States is attentive to Iran's behaviors and warned the Islamic Republic that if it does not change its conduct, the U.S. is prepared to increase its pressure on Iran. John Bolton, speaking at the 'United Against a Nuclear Iran' (UANI) summit in New York on September 24, described the Iranian government as a permanent threat to the U.S. and its allies, stating: 'If you take steps against us and our allies and harm our citizens, if you continue your lies, tricks, and deceptions, you will certainly face very bad consequences.' Bolton further stated that U.S. pressure on Iran will continue until it stops its destabilizing behavior, adding: 'Whenever we conclude that the regime [of Iran] is expanding its enrichment activities, the United States is ready to pursue various options. Whatever is necessary and appropriate.' He noted that the U.S. President plans to implement new sanctions against Iran starting from November 5, in addition to previous sanctions, stating: 'Our sanctions will be severe and ruthless. This is a maximum pressure campaign.' Bolton warned that 'those who wish to provide financial and banking facilities to Iran under these circumstances should prepare themselves for the risks of such actions.' These statements come as a statement was issued following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the five remaining countries in the 'JCPOA' and Mohammad Javad Zarif, emphasizing their 'commitment to pursuing specific actions' to ensure payment channels to Iran and the continuation of its oil exports. Bolton dismissed the importance of this statement, saying: 'The European Union is strong in rhetoric but weak in follow-up... We are watching the development of this structure that does not yet exist and for which no specific date has been announced for its establishment. We will not allow our sanctions to be violated by Europe or anyone else.' He further pointed out the exit of companies such as Siemens, Maersk, Hyundai, British Airways, and Mazda from Iran, stating that SWIFT should follow the same path and reconsider its cooperation with Iran. The financial system known as SWIFT monitors all international banking transactions. Previously, on September 23, 16 Republican senators had also urged the U.S. Treasury to take 'all necessary actions' to expel Iran from the SWIFT financial system. 'The days of immunity for Tehran are over,' Bolton emphasized, noting Iran's destabilizing activities in the region, the persistence of the Islamic Republic's ballistic missile program, and its support for proxy groups, stating: 'This regime (the Iranian government) proudly chants 'Death to America' and 'Death to Israel.' We must take their words seriously. The Ayatollahs do not come to create peace.' He also referred to the protests in Iran last December, stating: 'The people of Iran deserve a better government than the current one... This country should have a vibrant and hopeful nation and friends and partners around the world, including America. We look forward to the day when we can achieve this wish together, the day when Iran and America can start a new friendship in peace and balance. But until that day, this government will use every tool within its legal power to protect the United States, our allies, and our people.' In conclusion, the White House advisor stated: 'The United States is not naive. We are no longer fooled and will not accept threats. The days of immunity for Tehran and its agents are over. The deadly regime and its supporters will face significant consequences if they do not change their behavior... We are watching and will follow you.'
