Bombing of Two Main Hospitals in Aleppo

As the Syrian government forces continue their advance in Aleppo, two main hospitals in the city were heavily bombed on Friday, October 7, by Russian or Syrian military aircraft. Reuters reported, citing the World Health Organization and aid workers in Aleppo, that the destruction from the bombing was so severe that hospitals M10 and M2 are no longer usable. Mohammad Abu Rajab, a radiologist who worked at M10, told Reuters: 'Warplanes were flying above us and then dropped their bombs directly on us... It was around 4 AM.' The M10 hospital, located in a rebel-controlled area, is considered one of the largest hospitals in Aleppo. The report states that the bombing of M10 resulted in no casualties, but the hospital was completely destroyed, and hospitalized patients had to be transferred to another medical facility. The M2 hospital, located in the Al-Maadi area of Aleppo, was heavily shelled on Wednesday morning, with CNN reporting three casualties. Additionally, it has been reported that a bakery in the Al-Maadi area was also targeted, resulting in six deaths. Rebel-held areas in Aleppo have faced intense attacks from Syrian army forces over the past week, supported by Russian airstrikes and Iranian backing, leading to the deaths of hundreds. Reuters notes that only about 30 doctors are said to remain in the rebel neighborhoods while hundreds are injured daily in these areas. In this context, aid workers in Aleppo state that with the bombing of hospitals M10 and M2, there are effectively no large medical facilities left, and other hospitals are treating patients at double their capacity.
