Boris Johnson, UK Foreign Secretary, Resigns from His Position

Hours after the resignation of the Brexit Secretary, the UK Prime Minister's office announced that Boris Johnson has also resigned as Foreign Secretary. Theresa May's office stated in a brief announcement on Monday, July 9, that Johnson's resignation has been accepted, and his successor will be announced soon. Boris Johnson, a staunch supporter of the UK's exit from the European Union, has not yet made any comments regarding his resignation. Theresa May's strategy for pursuing Brexit faced opposition within her cabinet, but she managed to secure the agreement of her senior ministers just a few days ago. However, it was announced on Sunday evening that David Davis had resigned from the Brexit Ministry. He criticized May's strategy regarding the details of the EU exit, stating that the plan is 'too lenient.' The continuity of close trade with the EU post-Brexit and certain regulations regarding the presence of citizens from both sides in each other's countries are among the main points of contention within Theresa May's cabinet. According to the Associated Press, May's cabinet, which was already considered 'fragile,' has now reached a stage of 'deeply unstable.' May rejected David Davis's criticisms and wrote in a letter that her plan for the UK's exit from the EU aligns with her commitment to leave only the EU's single market. Dominic Raab, the former Housing Minister, has been appointed as the new Brexit Secretary. British citizens voted narrowly in a referendum two years ago to leave the EU. The UK government has planned for the exit from the EU to be completed by the end of March next year.
