Boroujerdi: The Authors of the JCPOA Commission Report Have Dealt a Serious Blow to the Country

Continuing the controversies surrounding the report of the JCPOA Commission of the Parliament regarding the Vienna nuclear agreement, the head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Parliament on Friday, October 17, accused the authors of this report of having "dealt a serious blow to the country" and "handed over documents to the enemy." Meanwhile, Ezzat Heydarpoor, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, reacted to the possibility of an abstention by the conservative faction in the Parliament during the session reviewing the plan related to the Vienna nuclear agreement, stating that this action would be "an act of disrespect to the Parliament" and "the ugliest and worst act." Aladdin Boroujerdi, Mansour Haqiqatpour, Gholamreza Tajgardoon, Masoud Pezeshkian, and Abbasali Mansouri Arani, five representatives who are members of the special JCPOA commission, on October 12 issued a statement calling the final report of this commission "one-sided" and emphasized that this report "was not in line with national interests" and ignored the positive effects of the Vienna nuclear agreement. These five and some other representatives announced that this report was prepared outside the Parliament. Two days after this statement, Alireza Zakani, the head of this special commission, stated that the draft of the final report was written in the commission's secretariat under his supervision and that ultimately "everything from A to Z was approved in this commission." Aladdin Boroujerdi, one of the signatories of this protest statement, considered Mr. Zakani's remarks that the draft of this report was written "by a group of academic individuals" as a confirmation of the protesters' claims, saying: "It is unclear where this report was written." The head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission emphasized that the authors of this report "are less familiar with international issues" and for this reason "with the bad report they prepared, they dealt a serious blow to the country" and "handed over documents to the enemy." Meanwhile, member Heydarpoor emphasized that Alireza Zakani is trying to impose "factional opinions and personal tastes" in reviewing the Vienna nuclear agreement and "does not have the capacity" to lead the commission. Mr. Boroujerdi also stated on October 14 that "the enemy will certainly rely on the JCPOA Commission report in the future" because it states that the right to inspect military sites has been granted to inspectors in the Vienna nuclear agreement. The JCPOA Commission, in its report read in the public session of the Parliament on October 12, announced that the Vienna nuclear agreement "has fundamental gaps and weaknesses in the military and security areas that, if not revised regarding inspections of military, defensive, and security sites and lack of attention during implementation, will pose problems for the country." Contrary to the criticism from five members of the JCPOA Commission and several representatives of the Parliament regarding this commission's report, some appointees of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, including Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor-in-chief of Kayhan newspaper, defended this report. Meanwhile, Kazem Sedighi, the Friday prayer leader of Tehran, described the JCPOA Commission report as the result of inviting "all experts and specialists." According to the Central News Unit, Mr. Sedighi added: "What happened afterwards is neither worthy of the Parliament nor a commendation for those who have worked so hard." The controversies regarding the JCPOA Commission report continue while the plan "Iran's Proportional and Reciprocal Action in Implementing the JCPOA" is set to be on the Parliament's agenda next week. Some members of the Velayat Faction, led by Ali Larijani, the Speaker of the Parliament, who support this plan, have warned about the consequences of a possible abstention by the conservative faction led by Gholamali Haddad Adel during the session reviewing this plan. Meanwhile, Ezzat Heydarpoor, a member of the Velayat Faction, stated that if this abstention occurs, it would be "an act of disrespect to the Parliament and can be referred to as the ugliest and worst act in the Parliament." According to the plan "Iran's Proportional and Reciprocal Action in Implementing the JCPOA," the Iranian government is allowed to implement the Vienna nuclear agreement "within the framework of the Supreme National Security Council's resolutions" and on the condition of "observing 9 provisions and obligations."
