Borrell: Disputes over the Implementation of the JCPOA Remain Unresolved

Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief, announced on Friday that disputes over the implementation of the JCPOA remain unresolved. Borrell stated that on September 14, he received a letter from the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the UK, indicating that Iran has not adhered to its commitments under the JCPOA since 2019. These three countries also announced their intention to refrain from taking necessary steps to lift sanctions on Iran. Borrell mentioned that after receiving this letter, he consulted with all JCPOA participants. He added that despite the differing views expressed, this issue remains unresolved to this day. Borrell also stated that the signatories of the JCPOA emphasized their determination to find a diplomatic solution within the framework of the JCPOA. He reiterated his commitment to continue efforts to fully resume the implementation of the JCPOA. Meanwhile, in September of this year, the Islamic Republic announced that the removal of some inspectors from the agency was a retaliation for the 'political abuses' by the United States, France, Germany, and the UK. Following this action, France, Germany, the UK, and the US issued a joint statement calling this action by the Islamic Republic another step in the 'wrong direction.' The UN nuclear watchdog also issued a statement criticizing the Islamic Republic for 'preventing inspections' and 'verification' of its disputed nuclear program. Grossi wrote on social media on October 25 that during a meeting with Mohammad Eslami at the agency's annual meeting, he emphasized the need for 'credible guarantees' that Iran's nuclear program is exclusively peaceful. Miller, the spokesperson for the US State Department, stated two days ago at a press conference on October 10 that the Biden administration's policy has not changed and is 'committed to ensuring that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons,' maintaining that diplomacy remains the preferred approach.
