Britain Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has granted approval for the updated COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech specifically targeting the 'XBB 1.5' variant of Omicron. According to Reuters, this vaccine, marketed as 'Comirnaty', is authorized for individuals aged six months and older, and its approval is equivalent to that of the European Medicines Agency. In addition to Pfizer and BioNTech, other vaccine manufacturers such as Moderna and Novavax have also produced monovalent versions of their vaccines to combat the 'XBB 1.5' variant. While the United States plans to make all three vaccines available to the public during the fall season, the UK intends to use the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines for its autumn immunization campaign against the Omicron subvariant. The 'XBB 1.5' variant was a globally dominant COVID strain earlier this year, prompting regulators, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, to select it as a primary target for COVID-19 vaccines. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the new variant may have a greater ability to infect individuals who have previously contracted COVID-19 or been vaccinated compared to older strains.
