Britain Calls for Dialogue Between Iranian Government and Protesters

Farhan Haq, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, quoted Mr. Guterres as saying, "We are saddened by reports of loss of life and hope that all forms of violence will be avoided from now on. We expect respect for the right to peaceful protests and freedom of expression for the people of Iran." France and Canada also reacted to the situation. France expressed concern over the "number of victims and detainees" in Iran. The French Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday, "The right to protest freely is a fundamental right." The French Foreign Ministry also mentioned that human rights will be the top priority in discussions between Paris and Tehran in the coming weeks. Canada also urged Iranian officials to respect the people's right to protest. According to AFP, the Canadian Foreign Ministry stated, "Canada is encouraged by the people of Iran who are exercising their fundamental right to peaceful protest." The statement continued, "We all urge Iranian officials to uphold and respect both democratic rights and human rights." The Canadian Foreign Ministry also stated that it will continue to support the fundamental rights of the people of Iran, including freedom of expression and opinion. Protests in Iran in recent days have resulted in 21 deaths and over a thousand arrests. Reports from NBC, Reuters, France, and the Associated Press indicate that over a thousand people have been detained during the protests in Iran, with at least 21 fatalities. Additionally, there have been expressions of support from Trump for Iranian protesters against the 'ruthless and corrupt' government. The Minister of Science expressed ignorance about the 'exact statistics' of detained students. Turkey has also expressed concern about the 'widening' protests in Iran.
