Britain: Facing Increasing Threats from ISIS, Iran, and Russia

Ken McCallum, Director General of MI5, stated on Tuesday, October 9, that his agency faces a "very difficult task" as the threat from ISIS has returned, and Iran and Russia are conspiring to carry out assassinations and sabotage in Britain. He added that after the West's withdrawal from Afghanistan, the group "ISIS Khorasan" gained strength and claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a concert in Moscow earlier this year. Mr. McCallum also referenced two brothers from Birmingham who were arrested and imprisoned while attempting to travel to Afghanistan to join "ISIS Khorasan." The MI5 Director General then pointed to the ongoing plots by the Islamic Republic of Iran over the past two years, stating that five Iranian plots have been thwarted by MI5 in the current calendar year, bringing the total number of such plots since 2022 to 20. He emphasized that Iranian state agents "widely use criminals as proxy agents" to threaten and intimidate opponents of the Iranian regime, asserting that if the regime feels that Britain plays a significant role in Middle Eastern conflicts by supporting Israel, it may focus its plots on other targets in Britain. Ken McCallum also mentioned that the Russian military intelligence agency (GRU) is on a "continuous mission to create chaos in the streets of Britain and Europe," referring to sabotage plots, arson, and destructive attacks. He noted the expulsion of over 750 Russian diplomats from European countries, most of whom are spies, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, adding that this has harmed the capabilities of Russian intelligence services, which now rely on drug traffickers and petty criminals to advance their plots. Mr. McCallum also highlighted China's efforts to obtain sensitive information, emphasizing that the issue with China is "different" and requires a more nuanced approach due to Britain's complex and multilayered relations with China. He stated that overall, the number of state-sponsored plots by China, Russia, Iran, and others has increased by 48% compared to last year. A day after receiving the latest information, Trump warned the Iranian government about attempts to assassinate him, and Blinken stated that the U.S. government takes the Islamic Republic's threats against Donald Trump and U.S. officials very seriously. U.S. intelligence and cybersecurity agencies have warned about attempts by Iranian-linked hackers to deploy ransomware, and CNN reported on Iranian hackers' operations ahead of the U.S. presidential election, raising concerns among experts about potential disruptions in the election following reports of hacking the Trump campaign headquarters.
