Britain Prepares for the Coronation of Charles III

Britain is preparing for the coronation of King Charles III, which is set to take place on Saturday. Dozens of world leaders and heads of state have been invited to this historic event, and millions are expected to watch the ceremony on television. According to the English section of Voice of America, the coronation will be held at Westminster Abbey in London, the same location where the mourning ceremony for Queen Elizabeth II, Charles's mother, was held last September after her death at the age of 96. Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, will lead the two-hour coronation ceremony. He will break from centuries-old traditions by asking those attending and the millions watching on television to publicly pledge their loyalty to King Charles with the words: 'I swear that I will be a true and faithful subject to Your Majesty and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.' For the first time, the religious ceremony will include female bishops and leaders of other faiths. The Diamond Jubilee coach is being prepared for the coronation on Saturday, May 6, 2023. This will be a grand and spectacular event, with hundreds of thousands expected to line the route from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, will travel to Westminster Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee coach. The coronation chair, which includes the 'Stone of Destiny,' has been moved to Westminster Abbey for Charles III's coronation. Charles will sit on a chair that has been used for the coronation of British monarchs for over 700 years. This chair includes the 'Stone of Scone' or 'Stone of Destiny,' an ancient ceremonial stone that was seized from the Scots by King Edward I in 1296. The king will be anointed with holy oil brought from Jerusalem. The ceremonial cross, which is said to contain pieces from the true cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, was given by Pope Francis. Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal commentator, told Voice of America that the details of the ceremony each have historical and religious significance. He said, 'The coronation dates back over a thousand years, to 973 AD, when King Edgar was crowned in [the city of] Bath. The first coronation at Westminster Abbey that we know of was that of William the Conqueror (William I) in 1066, and the actual rituals have not changed much over the centuries.' After the ceremony, Charles and Queen Camilla will be transported to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach, which is drawn by eight grey horses. This coach, built in 1762, has been used in all British coronations since 1831. Supporters of the British royal family have already lined the route for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Charles officially ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022. The coronation is not only an ancient rite but also an opportunity for the people of Britain to celebrate the accession of their new king. London will witness a coronation after 70 years; Iran and Russia have not been invited.
