Britain to Maintain Nuclear and Missile Sanctions Against the Islamic Republic

The British government announced on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, that it will continue to uphold nuclear and missile-related restrictions against the Islamic Republic following the 'Transition Day' of the JCPOA. According to the nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA, on this 'Transition Day', certain restrictions related to Iran's nuclear and missile programs, including 84 UN sanctions and 112 UK sanctions against individuals and entities involved in Iran's nuclear and missile activities, as well as some arms and missile restrictions against the Iranian government, were supposed to be lifted. The British government stated that 'in response to Iran's serious and provocative non-compliance with the JCPOA since 2019,' Britain, alongside the European Union, has added UN sanctions to its independent sanctions and is applying them against the Islamic Republic. The statement emphasized that Britain, France, and Germany had previously informed the JCPOA coordinator of this decision on September 14, 2023. The British government considers this action a 'proportionate and legitimate response to the escalation of nuclear tension' by the Islamic Republic of Iran and 'fully in accordance with the JCPOA.' According to the British government's statement, the level of Iran's nuclear advancements has no civilian justification and poses a serious threat to international peace and security, undermining the global non-proliferation regime. Britain, along with its partners under the 'Non-Proliferation Security Initiative,' condemns the Islamic Republic for providing missile and drone technology to its partners and proxy forces. Britain believes this action by the Islamic Republic jeopardizes international stability and exacerbates regional tensions. In its concluding statement, the British government reiterated its commitment, alongside its partners, to counter the missile threat posed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The maintenance of nuclear and missile sanctions against the Islamic Republic by the United States and the three European countries involved in the JCPOA comes as Russia announced on Tuesday that it no longer sees the need to comply with UN Security Council resolutions regarding the provision of missile technology to Iran following the expiration of these resolutions on October 18, 2023. Despite this announcement, the Russian Foreign Ministry did not clarify whether it now intends to support the development of Iran's missile program. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement, 'the supply of goods subject to the missile technology control regime to and from Iran no longer requires prior approval from the UN Security Council.' The Russian Foreign Ministry also called on the European Union and the United States to lift their sanctions against the Islamic Republic. The aim of the UN sanctions is to prevent the development of ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads by the Islamic Republic. These sanctions will expire on October 18, 2023. Nevertheless, the United States, Britain, and the European Union have announced weeks in advance that they will continue to enforce these sanctions. Reuters had previously reported that Russia's use of Iranian drones against Ukraine, the potential transfer of ballistic missiles from the Iranian government to Russia, and the necessity of depriving the Islamic Republic of the benefits of the JCPOA are the three main reasons for this decision.
