Britain's Plan to Establish a Global Oversight Organization for Artificial Intelligence

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of Britain, intends to establish a 'Global Artificial Intelligence Oversight Organization' based in London. According to the Times newspaper, the idea for this organization is inspired by the 'International Atomic Energy Agency' and aims to 'reap the benefits of artificial intelligence while preventing its potential dangers to humanity.' The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was established in 1957 with 176 member countries, including India, and is responsible for overseeing 'the use of nuclear energy, reviewing safety standards, and monitoring the non-military use of this energy.' A British minister told the Times that 'this country is the best place to establish a new organization because many leading companies in this field have a strong presence in Britain.' Rishi Sunak is set to discuss cooperation on AI oversight with U.S. President Joe Biden in their meeting next week. Although this plan is still in its early stages, if it progresses, the British government could seek to quickly launch and manage this organization. While Mr. Sunak is forming an oversight organization in the field of AI, the European Union is also improving its regulations in this area and is expected to adopt a stricter stance on oversight of this sector.
