British Couple Arrested in Iran Charged with 'Espionage'

The judiciary news agency of the Islamic Republic announced that the British couple arrested in Iran has been charged with 'espionage.' According to a statement published by 'Mizan,' it is claimed that Craig and Lindsay Foreman 'were collaborating with entities related to the intelligence services of hostile and Western countries.' Iranian state media reported last week on the couple's arrest in Kerman on security-related charges. Mrs. Foreman, who shared her daily experiences on social media, stated that their journey through various countries on a motorcycle was part of a 'positive psychology' program. Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were traveling by motorcycle to Australia, entered Iran from Armenia on January 9 and planned to head to Pakistan after a few days. After staying in the cities of Tabriz, Tehran, and Isfahan, they traveled to Kerman with their tour guide but did not reach their hotel. The Mizan news agency quoted Asghar Jahangir, the spokesman for the judiciary, claiming that the couple was 'under surveillance while gathering information' and were arrested 'in cooperation with security agencies.' He alleged without providing evidence that the couple entered Iran 'under the guise of tourists' and engaged in 'information collection' under the pretext of 'research and academic activities' in several provinces of the country. Previously, Iranian security and judicial officials had leveled similar accusations against several foreign nationals or dual citizens after their arrests; accusations that were later denied by their families and the individuals themselves upon release. Iranian state media recently published photos of British Ambassador Hugo Shorter meeting with the two detained British citizens in Kerman, accompanied by judicial and security officials from the province. These media outlets referred to the two detained British citizens as 'security suspects' on February 13 without mentioning their identities. In the photos, the two individuals sitting across from Mr. Shorter are unidentifiable as their faces are blurred. Last December, Mrs. Foreman wrote in a social media post about facing 'one of the most challenging' parts of her journey, namely going to Iran and Pakistan, and in January of this year, she shared a photo from her visit to Isfahan. The caption of a photo she shared from her meeting with a cleric at the Nasir al-Din School in Isfahan states that she was pleased to meet 'this kind and thoughtful cleric.' The couple also intended to travel to the Balochistan province of Pakistan. The British Foreign Office has warned its citizens not to travel to Iran due to the risk of 'arrest and execution.' Human rights groups and Western governments have repeatedly accused the Iranian government of adopting a 'hostage-taking' policy as a bargaining tool to gain political concessions. Currently, several foreign and dual citizens are imprisoned in the Islamic Republic on baseless charges, and the Iranian government continues to violate its international obligations in this regard.
