British Intelligence Officials: The Islamic Republic is a Serious Threat to British Citizens

British security officials and anti-terrorism officers announced that the Islamic Republic remains an increasing security threat to British citizens and to its opponents and critics within the country, stating that the danger posed by Iran to the people and interests of Britain is now greater than that from China and Russia. The Guardian reported on Monday that with the onset of the battle between the Israeli army and Hamas, Britain is concerned that radical religious groups and Iran-backed proxy groups, incited and encouraged by Tehran, may carry out terrorist actions in Britain. The newspaper noted a report from the director of the UK's domestic security service, adding that the Islamic Republic had orchestrated at least 15 plots to kidnap or assassinate British citizens and its opponents and critics based in the UK, which were thwarted by vigilant security forces. The Guardian also referenced reports of threats against opponents of the Islamic Republic, particularly journalists and media activists in the UK, stating that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has long established a network of influence in Britain linked to over 10 mosques, groups, and educational institutions across the country. According to the newspaper, the British Foreign Office opposed placing the IRGC on its list of terrorist organizations this summer, stating that doing so, especially when the European Union also opposes it, would lead to the expulsion of the British ambassador from Tehran and consequently the loss of Britain's remaining influence in Iran. Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, added the IRGC to the list of foreign terrorist organizations in April 2019. On October 6, 2023, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 2024 budget bill for the State Department, which included an amendment prohibiting the removal of the IRGC from the list of foreign terrorist organizations. At least two Republican members of the House of Representatives also requested a closed session with some U.S. intelligence and security officials to discuss the 'efforts of the Islamic Republic' to assassinate former U.S. officials. They also urged the Biden administration to provide Congress with complete information on the number of active plots by the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces against American citizens on U.S. soil. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department responded that the U.S. government takes any threat seriously and defends and protects its citizens, including all those who have served or are currently serving the U.S. The Pentagon reported that in the past two weeks, there have been 'at least 23 attacks' on American forces in the Middle East. The U.S. has renewed its attacks on Iran's proxies; Kanani stated that they hope for the correction of America's 'wrong policies.' The White House stated that it will respond to attacks by the Islamic Republic and its proxy groups. The Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee called for practical action from the Biden administration regarding the Islamic Republic. The U.S. has asked its allies in the Middle East to help cut off funding networks for Hamas.
