British Prime Minister Apologizes for Government's Failure to Assist Fire Victims

Theresa May, the Prime Minister of Britain, apologized on Wednesday, June 21, for the 'weakness and inability of the government' in assisting the victims of the major fire incident at Grenfell Tower in London. At the same time, the British government began providing housing for those who have become homeless. According to Reuters, Theresa May accepted responsibility for her government's shortcomings in dealing with the aftermath of last week's fire and pledged that victims of this incident would receive more assistance. She stated in a session of the British Parliament: 'The help provided to families in the first hours after the incident was neither sufficient nor effective. This was a failure of the government at both local and national levels that could not provide services to people who were in dire need of assistance.' Mrs. May apologized for these shortcomings and added: 'I take responsibility for addressing these deficiencies.' The Prime Minister further stated that families who have lost their homes will receive assistance for the down payment on housing from the emergency fund. She reiterated her commitment that all those who lost their homes would be accommodated in other residences within three weeks. Meanwhile, Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, stated that 68 newly built government homes in a neighborhood of West London, valued at approximately £3.5 million, would be made available to these individuals. He added that this is the first set of permanent housing provided to the fire victims. Police report that 79 people have died or are missing as a result of this fire. According to the report, the Grenfell Tower fire incident highlighted the deep economic divide between social groups residing in London. This residential tower, which housed mostly ordinary and poor families, was located just a few hundred meters from one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Britain. Kensington in West London is a prime area where foreign buyers have invested in real estate in recent years. According to Reuters, Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party, has called on the government to seize and confiscate vacant homes in this neighborhood to provide housing for the survivors. According to estimates by real estate agencies, the prices of homes in the newly renovated residential complex, where the government plans to house some of the victims, range from £1.5 to £3.5 million. This residential complex is located just over a kilometer from Grenfell Tower. The government states that the homes provided to the victims will be a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, and the construction company is working to prepare them as quickly as possible by allocating more resources.
