British Prime Minister in Tel Aviv: We Stand with Israel to Combat Terrorism

Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, arrived in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Thursday, October 19. According to Arash Sigarchi, a correspondent for Voice of America in Israel, Mr. Sunak will meet with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, and Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, during this visit. He is expected to travel to other capitals in the region after these discussions. In a brief message before the start of his talks, the British Prime Minister stated, 'We stand with you in Israel to combat terrorism.' Reuters reported that Rishi Sunak, in a statement prior to his trip to Israel, said, 'The death of civilians is a tragedy, and many lives have been lost due to Hamas's horrific actions.' He also mentioned that the deadly explosion on Tuesday, October 17, at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza should be 'a turning point for leaders in the region and around the world to reach consensus and prevent escalation of conflicts.' Health officials in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip claim that hundreds were killed following the Israeli attack on the Al-Ahli hospital, but Israel has denied these accusations. In this context, Daniel Hagari, a spokesperson for the Israeli army, responded to the allegations of Israel's involvement in the explosion by citing evidence obtained by Israeli military units, stating, 'We have released a recording of two Hamas commanders discussing the misfire of an Islamic Jihad missile at the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza.' According to Reuters, the British Prime Minister emphasized that his country will be at the forefront of efforts to combat the escalation of war. A day earlier, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, had visited the region. Sunak is also expected to call for the opening of a safe passage for humanitarian aid to Gaza and the evacuation of trapped British citizens from Gaza during this visit. The British Prime Minister's office stated that since Hamas's attack on southern Israel, at least seven British citizens have been killed and at least nine are missing. Rishi Sunak's office also announced that James Cleverly, the British Foreign Secretary, will travel to Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar in the next three days to discuss the ongoing conflict and seek a peaceful resolution. Mr. Sunak had told Benjamin Netanyahu a day after Hamas's attack on Israel, which resulted in over 1,400 deaths, that London clearly stands with Israel.
