Call on the International Community to Halt Executions in Iran; Reaction from French Parliament Representatives

Six female political prisoners from Evin Prison have called on the international community to end the "mass executions" by the Islamic Republic of Iran. French parliament representatives heard their voices and, in support of this request, about 50 members of the French parliament simultaneously published a message on their social media, urging the Iranian government to stop the executions. Leo Walter, a parliament member and symbolic godfather of Amin Mahdi Shakrollahi, a 17-year-old who was arrested during recent protests in Iran and faces the death penalty, told AFP that the aim of this action is to make the voices of Iranians condemned to death heard. Clementine Autain, another representative who was the political sponsor of Mohammad Mahdi Karami, also participated in this Twitter storm. These representatives used the hashtag "French MPs for Iran" (FrenchMP4Iran#). Six imprisoned political activists in Iran, including Narges Mohammadi, Golrokh Iraee, Sepideh Ghaleian, Bahareh Hedayat, Nasrin Jamali, and Zahra Sarvi, in a letter from Evin Prison, called on the community to exert maximum pressure on the Islamic Republic of Iran and to immediately stop the executions. On Saturday, May 6, the Islamic Republic executed Habib Chab, a Swedish-Iranian citizen from the Arab Ahvaz minority, on charges of "corruption on earth" and carried out the death sentences of Youssef Mehrdad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zareh on charges of "insulting sacred values." Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in a statement expressed serious concern over the "horrific" statistics of executions in Iran, urging Iranian officials to abolish the death penalty or halt all executions, following the example of most countries. According to a UN report, at least 209 people have been executed in Iran since January 1, most of them for drug-related offenses.
