Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi Calls for Her 'Unconditional' Release

The Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi announced in a statement in response to the annulment of the death sentence of this labor activist by the Supreme Court that "we demand the acquittal of Sharifeh Mohammadi from all charges and her unconditional freedom." According to the statement, the annulment of Sharifeh's death sentence is the result of collective efforts, including labor organizations, teachers, professional groups, students, retirees in Iran and around the world, as well as human rights organizations and the media. The statement emphasized that the annulment of Sharifeh's death sentence does not overlook the oppression, injustice, and harassment that Sharifeh, her child, her mother, her husband, and her entire family have suffered. The statement clearly declared that "until Sharifeh Mohammadi is unconditionally freed, we will continuously, explicitly, and decisively fight and organize for her freedom." Based on this statement, the issue of Sharifeh's torture and the violation of her fundamental rights regarding organization and freedom of expression is being pursued through complaints in international forums. According to reports, today, Sharifeh Mohammadi's lawyer announced on Saturday, October 21, that the death sentence of this civil activist has been annulled by the Supreme Court. Amir Reisiann stated, "The case has been referred for reconsideration to an equivalent branch." Sharifeh Mohammadi was arrested in December of last year and was sentenced to death on July 14, 2023, by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on charges of "baghi" (rebellion). On Sunday, October 15, a protest gathering of retirees in Shush chanted: "Sharifeh Mohammadi must be freed." The annulment of Sharifeh Mohammadi's death sentence was seen as a significant step, with the Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi stating that the request to annul the death sentence is a strong no to government-sanctioned murder. Dariush Eghbali, supporting the strike of women in Evin Prison, called for the annulment of Sharifeh Mohammadi's death sentence. Italy has requested a review of Sharifeh Mohammadi's death sentence. The prolonged process of reviewing the case of the labor activist sentenced to death has raised concerns from the Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi.
