Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi: Complaint Filed Regarding Execution Case with UN Fact-Finding Committee

The Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist sentenced to death, announced in a statement that a detailed report and case file documenting numerous human rights violations perpetrated by the security and judicial institutions of the Islamic Republic against Ms. Mohammadi has been submitted to and registered with the UN Fact-Finding Committee concerning Iran. The campaign stated in its statement released on Sunday, July 16, that 'a complaint is also underway in this regard.' The statement notes that 'this report, which has recently been completed and submitted, meticulously and substantively details all forms of harassment, torture, violations of basic rights in the judicial process, violations of citizenship rights in independent organization formation, issuance of a death sentence based on unfounded allegations, and dozens of other detailed cases, prepared with the expert opinion of domestic and international human rights specialists.' The Campaign to Defend Sharifeh Mohammadi pointed out that other complaints and reports will soon be registered and pursued with other international bodies and authorities. Additionally, two human rights organizations condemned the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi and called for international community intervention. The statement did not specify the details of these complaints and reports but mentioned that public opinion would soon be informed about them. Nevertheless, the campaign emphasized that in addition to 'efforts to immediately revoke the unjust death sentence against Sharifeh Mohammadi and to secure her immediate and unconditional release, it will not hesitate to raise awareness regarding the systematic actions of the Iranian government in violating citizens' rights concerning other prisoners.' Sharifeh Mohammadi, who was a member of the 'Coordination Committee to Help Establish Labor Organizations' over a decade ago, was arrested in December of last year and sentenced to death on July 4 by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht on charges of 'baghy' (rebellion). This sentence was issued based on allegations from the Ministry of Intelligence of the Islamic Republic regarding Ms. Mohammadi's membership in 'Komala,' which has been vehemently denied by Ms. Mohammadi, her husband, Siros Fathi, and Komala. The Coordination Committee to Help Establish Labor Organizations, which Sharifeh Mohammadi was a member of in the 1980s, also rejected the allegations against her. Reports indicate that she has been tortured, and government agents have accused her of 'membership in the armed Komala group' without any evidence. This organization has also denied this claim. In recent days, activists and human rights, labor, and professional organizations in Iran, as well as human rights organizations and labor unions worldwide, along with several Iranian activists such as Masih Alinejad and Hamid Ismailioun, have condemned the death sentence for Ms. Mohammadi. Furthermore, during protests by retirees in several cities in Iran and gatherings of Iranian protesters in Europe and Canada, the need to revoke the death sentence for this labor activist and secure her freedom has been emphasized. Widespread protests against the issuance of the death sentence for Ms. Mohammadi have also occurred on social media.
