Canadian Police Neutralize Suspect in Terrorist Operation

On Wednesday evening, August 20, Canadian police shot and neutralized a supporter of the group known as 'Islamic State' or ISIS, who intended to carry out a suicide attack. Canadian media, including CBC News, identified the suspect as Aaron Driver, 24, who planned to conduct this operation in the community of Strathroy in Ontario. According to reports, Aaron Driver initially detonated a bomb, injuring himself and another person, and ultimately, police shot him to neutralize the threat. The identity of the other injured individual has not yet been disclosed. Police emphasized that they had to shoot Aaron Driver because he possessed another bomb and intended to detonate it. CBC News describes Aaron Driver as a known figure to Canadian police, having been arrested last summer for his activities supporting ISIS. The report states that he had admitted in court that he might have participated in terrorist group activities, either directly or indirectly, and was therefore released only conditionally, with his actions monitored by security agencies. Previously, he had also been arrested in the fall of 2014 for tweets under a pseudonym supporting ISIS militants, defending the recent terrorist attack on the Canadian Parliament at that time. A senior Canadian police official stated that he intended to carry out a suicide attack in a public environment. Aaron Driver is from Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba province in southwestern Canada.
