Catalonia Parliament Representative Takes Political Guardianship of Pakhshan Azizi

The Political Prisoners' Freedom Committee reported that Ruben Wagensberg, a representative of the Catalonia Parliament in Spain, has taken political guardianship of Pakhshan Azizi, a civil activist sentenced to death in Iran, following contact from activists of this committee. According to the report, Mr. Wagensberg sent a letter to the Islamic Republic of Iran's embassy in Madrid, requesting the cancellation of Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence and his release. Pakhshan Azizi, a political prisoner, was arrested on August 4 last year in the Kharazi neighborhood of Tehran and was subjected to interrogation and torture at the Islamic Republic's intelligence detention center. Ms. Azizi had previously recounted her experience of arrest and torture by security agencies in a letter titled "Concealment of Truth and Its Alternative," which was obtained by Hengaw and published on July 22, two days before the announcement of her death sentence. She wrote that she was repeatedly subjected to hanging during interrogations, being taken 10 meters down into the ground and then brought back up, being considered socially defeated and broken. This civil activist was transferred from the intelligence detention center to Ward 209 of Evin Prison and then to the women's ward of this prison. In the winter of last year, she was accused of "Baghi through membership in opposition groups" at Branch 5 of the Evin Security Prosecutor's Office. This political prisoner, originally from Mahabad and a graduate of social work from Allameh Tabatabai University, was first arrested in November 2009 during a student protest against political executions and was released on bail of 100 million tomans on March 18, 2010. She was tried in June of this year on charges of "Baghi" and sentenced to death. Before her, Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist imprisoned in Lakan Prison in Rasht, was also sentenced to death on charges of Baghi. The charge of "Baghi" can lead to the death penalty or long-term imprisonment.
