Ceasefire Established in Gaza One Day After Palestinian Prisoner's Death

Following clashes that erupted after the death of a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in an Israeli prison on May 1, armed groups in Gaza and Israeli forces engaged in conflict. Three Palestinian officials reported an agreement between both sides to establish a ceasefire. Reports indicate that during the clashes, rockets from Hamas and Islamic Jihad were fired towards Israel, and Israeli military aircraft bombed militant positions in the area. The Israeli army stated that at least 30 rockets were launched towards southern Israel, including the city of Ashkelon, located 14 kilometers from Gaza, prompting residents to rush to shelters. Reports indicate that two Israelis were injured. Reuters quoted Tarek Salmi, a spokesperson for Islamic Jihad, stating that both sides agreed to a ceasefire early Wednesday. Meanwhile, in the West Bank, a number of Palestinians mourned for Khader Adnan, the deceased Palestinian prisoner. Prison officials found Khader Adnan unconscious in his cell on Tuesday and transferred him to the hospital, but according to the Israeli prison service, after efforts to revive him failed, the hospital declared him dead. Khader Adnan had been on a hunger strike since February 4 of last year and was due to be tried soon. He is the first Palestinian prisoner to die in an Israeli prison in over thirty years. Khader Adnan had previously gone on hunger strikes multiple times in Israeli prisons. Islamic Jihad warned Israel regarding Sheikh Khader Adnan. The Israeli Defense Minister revealed details about the financial assistance of the Islamic Republic to terrorist groups. The Wall Street Journal reported on a meeting between the commander of the Quds Force and leaders of militia groups regarding attacks on Israel.
