Cecilia Sala on Her Detention in Iran, the Role of Musk, and Triangular Diplomacy

Cecilia Sala, the Italian journalist who was released after 21 days of detention in Iran, revealed details of the diplomatic negotiations between Iran, Italy, and the United States that led to her release in her first television interview after freedom. She, whose fate was tied to the case of Mohammad Abedini, an Iranian wanted by the U.S., stated that she expected to remain in prison for a much longer time. Sala also confirmed that her boyfriend's contact with Andrea Stroppa, Elon Musk's representative in Italy, likely played a significant role in her release. According to Sala, her boyfriend, Daniele Raneri, contacted Stroppa after hearing reports of Musk's meeting with the Iranian ambassador to the UN, and Musk was aware of her case. After Sala's release, he tweeted that he had a 'small role' in the matter and merely recommended supporting the U.S. government's efforts. At the same time, Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, traveled to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Donald Trump. Meloni described the process as 'triangular diplomacy' that led to Sala's release and subsequently Abedini's return to Iran. In the interview, Sala mentioned that she was held in solitary confinement without access to her glasses or contact lenses and was interrogated for up to 10 hours a day. She added, 'The interrogations were conducted with a blindfold, and the interrogator was fluent in English and had extensive knowledge about Italy.' She also spoke about the harsh conditions of her cell, where neon lights were kept on 24 hours a day, making her feel that her connection to reality was slipping away: 'I lost confidence in my memory, and answering the interrogators' questions became a heavy psychological game.' Sala expressed her concerns about the possibility of her detention being prolonged due to regional tensions. She believed that if Donald Trump were to return to the White House and adopt aggressive positions against Iran, her situation would become more complicated. Now, despite moments of anxiety and concern after her release, Sala hopes to manage these challenges and return to normal life. Italy denied Musk's contact with the Iranian representative regarding Sala. Nahid Taghavi, an Iranian-German citizen, was released from Iranian captivity. Olivier Grunewald, a French 'hostage' of the Iranian regime, claimed his innocence. Mohammad Abedini, accused of violating U.S. sanctions, returned to Iran. The Italian Minister of Justice requested the cancellation of Abedini's detention. Italy stated that the U.S. has not yet requested Abedini's extradition.
