According to Reuters, the office of Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, announced on Wednesday that Cecilia Sala, the Italian journalist who was arrested and imprisoned in Iran, has been released and is on a plane returning home. The statement mentioned that Sala was freed 'thanks to intensive work in diplomatic and intelligence channels.' The statement did not refer to the case of Abedini. Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old Italian citizen collaborating with 'Il Folibo' and 'Chura Media,' was arrested by the intelligence forces of the Islamic Republic on December 20. Ms. Sala had officially traveled to Iran with a journalist visa and had published reports on recent developments in Iran following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria. Some media outlets, citing a spokesperson from the U.S. State Department, reported that the arrest of this Italian journalist by the Islamic Republic was in retaliation for the arrest of Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, a Swiss-Iranian citizen, in Italy. Abedini was arrested for violating U.S. sanctions against Iran regarding the transfer of drone technology to Iran.
