CENTCOM: A Senior ISIS Official in Syria Killed in US Strike

The United States Central Command, CENTCOM, announced on Wednesday, June 19, that a senior official of the Islamic State group, ISIS, was killed in a US airstrike in Syria. According to the US military, on Sunday, June 17, during a strike by CENTCOM in Syria, "Osama Jamal Muhammad Ibrahim al-Janabi," a senior ISIS official and facilitator, was killed. CENTCOM emphasized in its statement that "the death of this senior official will disrupt ISIS's ability to secure resources and carry out terrorist attacks." The US military further stated that there were "no indications" of civilian casualties in this strike. In recent years, the US military has continued to pursue ISIS officials in Africa and the Middle East. According to US Africa Command, nearly three weeks ago, an airstrike in a remote area near "Dahardar" in Somalia resulted in the deaths of three ISIS militants. Between January and March 2024, CENTCOM and its partners killed seven ISIS operatives in Syria and arrested 27 others. During the same period in Iraq, 11 operatives of this militant group were killed and 36 were arrested. General Eric Kurilla, CENTCOM's commander, stated in April, "We are committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS due to the threat this group poses at the regional and global levels." According to Mr. Kurilla, the United States remains focused on efforts to target those ISIS members seeking to conduct operations outside Iraq and Syria, as well as those members attempting to rebuild the group. This extremist group, recognized as terrorist by many countries, captured a vast area of Iraq and then eastern Syria in 2014. After several years of battles in which the US-led international coalition played a significant role, the group was defeated and most of the areas it had captured in Iraq and Syria were liberated. Hundreds of soldiers from European countries are also under the command of this coalition.
