CENTCOM Commander Visits Iraq and Syria for 'Condition Assessment' of U.S. Bases

Following an increase in attacks on U.S. military forces after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, the head of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) visited U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria on a two-day trip. According to a CENTCOM press release, on Friday, December 15, General Michael Erik Kurilla met with senior Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani and General Abdul Amir Yarallah, Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, to discuss current concerns within the framework of local and regional security. The statement noted that during his regional visit on December 13 and 14, the CENTCOM commander assessed the operational and security conditions at U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria and discussed progress in operations against ISIS and protective measures for U.S. forces in Syria. According to an unnamed U.S. Department of Defense official, Iranian-backed militia groups have attacked U.S. positions in Iraq and Syria 94 times with drones and missiles since October 17. In recent weeks, the Islamic Republic has claimed, contrary to evidence, expert opinions, and statements from other countries, that it has no proxy groups in the Middle East. In recent months, as threats against U.S. forces in the Middle East have intensified, the U.S. military has reported an increase in oversight mechanisms in the region. General Kurilla had previously described the continuous review of protective measures for U.S. forces as 'vital' in light of the rising number of attacks and attempts to target U.S. military bases. According to the CENTCOM commander, measures taken to enhance the protection of U.S. forces and the expansion of military equipment deployment in the region have 'prevented more serious casualties' among U.S. forces on the ground. Additionally, senior U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, have warned about the heightened risk of attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East and the potential willingness of the Iranian government to escalate the Israel-Hamas war. The increase in U.S. military oversight in the Middle East coincides with rising threats, and the U.S. has signaled its presence in the region with the announcement of a nuclear-capable submarine. The Egyptian President also met with the CENTCOM commander, reflecting increased global efforts to 'restore stability' to the region, and the CENTCOM commander entered Tel Aviv for discussions with Israeli military officials.
