Ceremonies Held Worldwide on the Second Anniversary of September 11

Ceremonies have been held worldwide to mark the second anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States. In Brussels, European Union ambassadors observed a minute of silence. The Union, which was divided over the Iraq war, reiterated its solidarity with the United States and other countries in the fight against terrorism. In Moscow, Igor Ivanov, the Russian Foreign Minister, expressed his country's sorrow over the losses from the terrorist attacks and urged Washington to seek reconciliation with its allies. Mr. Ivanov reminded that victory in the war on terrorism can only be achieved through solidarity with the international community. Meanwhile, in London, Prince Andrew opened a garden established in memory of the 67 British victims of the September 11 attacks. In Canberra, the Australian Parliament observed a minute of silence, while in front of the U.S. Embassy in Japan, Buddhist monks in yellow robes prayed in front of a group for peace. India declared September 11 as National Anti-Terrorism Day, and teachers and students at a small school in eastern Pakistan lit candles and observed a minute of silence.
