Chaos in an Israeli Security Prison Following Arrest of Suspects in 'Sexual Assault of a Palestinian Prisoner'

Israeli media report that emergency meetings of the country's military to discuss retaliatory options against Hezbollah in Lebanon have been postponed due to widespread chaos in a detention center for Palestinian security prisoners. On Tuesday, August 1, the Israeli Army Radio reported that the Chief of Staff and other senior military and security officials abandoned urgent discussions regarding preparations for an attack on Hezbollah in response to the group's rocket attack on a football stadium in northern Israel to address the unprecedented chaos that ensued after hundreds of right-wing supporters stormed the detention center housing Palestinian militants. The assault on the prison known as 'Sde Teiman' occurred after Israeli media revealed on Monday that nine reserve soldiers had been arrested and interrogated at the facility on suspicion of sexually assaulting a member of the Hamas extremist group. The Hamas group is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. Reports indicate that hundreds of protesters, mostly activists from right-wing parties, including at least one politician, went to the 'Sde Teiman' detention center to protest the interrogation and arrest of the nine reserve soldiers suspected of involvement in the 'assault' on a Hamas prisoner. The Israeli internal security agency has been holding several members of Hamas's 'elite' unit in the 'Sde Teiman' facility since the onset of the Gaza war. The Hamas group was responsible for the surprise attack on Israel on October 7 last year, and Israel insists that the elite forces of this extremist group were trained for years to carry out attacks on Israel, killing people and abducting Israeli citizens to Gaza. The 'Sde Teiman' detention center is located in a military base in the Negev desert in southern Israel. Human rights groups advocating for Palestinians claim that torture, sexual assault, and deprivation of food have become 'commonplace' against Hamas detainees in Israeli prisons. However, some segments of the Israeli public and politicians have criticized the media for portraying 'dangerous terrorists' from Hamas as living comfortably in detention centers with amenities funded by Israeli taxpayers. This group of Israelis accuses legal institutions, the country's Supreme Court, and the military prosecutor's office of acting to 'defend the rights of terrorists.' According to Haaretz, a media outlet critical of Benjamin Netanyahu's government, 'the Israeli far-right has been trying to impose its values on the military since the start of the Gaza war.' Videos that circulated on social media on Monday showed the attacking crowd shaking the metal doors of the 'Sde Teiman' base and then storming in after the entry of Tsvi Sukot, a member of parliament and an ally of the Prime Minister in the government coalition. Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the chaos in the detention center and called for calm, but Yair Lapid, the leader of the Israeli opposition, attributed the resulting disorder to the presence of right-wingers in Netanyahu's government coalition and called for legal institutions to prosecute those responsible for the incident. Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, described the assault as 'very serious and illegal' during his visit to the 'Sde Teiman' detention center on Monday night. Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister and leader of a right-wing party in the government coalition, wrote on social media that he is asking the military prosecutor to refrain from prosecuting the reserve soldiers who are the guards of the detention center. Yoav Gallant, Israel's defense minister, said on Tuesday that he asked Benjamin Netanyahu to investigate the suspicion that, on the possible orders of Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Minister of National Security whose police operate under him, the police did not arrest any of the attackers at the 'Sde Teiman' detention center. Mr. Ben-Gvir is considered a far-right politician. The Israeli government presented its first public report on the status of detention centers housing Hamas detainees this spring. The report indicated that approximately four thousand Palestinians had been detained in Gaza since the onset of the Hamas attack on Israel, but emphasized that one thousand five hundred of the detainees were released and returned to Gaza due to a lack of solid evidence. Following a subsequent request by five human rights groups to the Israeli Supreme Court challenging the legality of these detentions, Israeli officials stated that they would transfer hundreds of Gaza detainees to other military-controlled facilities. Until about 12 days ago, more than 700 Gaza detainees held at the 'Sde Teiman' facility were transferred to other centers, but about 40 of them remain in this detention center. According to the Israeli Army Radio, the involvement of military leaders and senior military and security officials in the crisis surrounding the 'Sde Teiman' detention center has affected the army's preparations for an attack on Hezbollah in response to the rocket attack by Hezbollah on northern Israel on Saturday. In this attack, a rocket hit a football stadium in northern Palestine, resulting in the deaths of 12 children and injuries to dozens of other children and some spectators. Meanwhile, Lufthansa announced that it canceled its flights to and from Israel on August 1 'for technical reasons.' Among the canceled flights on Tuesday were those from Munich and Frankfurt to Israel. Lufthansa also canceled its flights to Lebanon until next week. Many other Arab and Western airlines have also canceled flights to Beirut due to fears of a possible Israeli attack on Lebanon. Israeli leaders have emphasized that they will respond 'painfully' to Hezbollah's rocket attack on northern Israel but are not willing to engage in a full-scale war. On the other hand, Arab sources from Lebanon have reported that Hezbollah is preparing for an Israeli attack and has evacuated some of its bases and important centers. France and the United States have urged Israel not to escalate its response into a full-scale war. The Iranian government has also warned Israel and its supporters in this regard.
