Charges Filed Against Teenager Accused of Killing Four at Georgia High School; Father Arrested

A 14-year-old teenager accused of killing four people in a deadly shooting at a high school in Georgia was formally charged on Friday, September 6. The father of the student was arrested on Thursday for allegedly allowing his son to carry a weapon. According to court documents obtained by the Associated Press, the teenager named Colton Gray killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, with a semi-automatic rifle. Nine others were also injured in the shooting. Authorities have not yet commented on the motive for the shooting, how the teenager obtained the weapon, or how he brought it to the school environment. The Georgia prosecutor's office stated that Colin Gray, the 54-year-old father of the student, was arrested on Thursday in connection with the shooting and charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder. The head of the Georgia prosecutor's office added, 'His charges are related to his son's actions and allowing him to carry a weapon.' This is the latest case of holding parents accountable for their children's shootings in American high schools. In April of this year, for the first time, the parents of a teenager who shot at a school in Michigan were convicted in court. Jennifer and James Crumbley were each sentenced to 10 years in prison for failing to securely store a firearm in their home and being indifferent to their children's deteriorating mental health before the shooting. Their child killed four students in a shooting at their school in 2021. The Georgia prosecutor's office has charged Colton Gray as an adult with four counts of murder. The victims included two 14-year-old students and two teachers, one aged 39 and the other 53. A local police report in Winder, which the Associated Press has seen, indicates that last year, after a threatening message was posted on social media, police questioned Colton Gray, but he denied any threat of a school shooting at that time. During that investigation, due to conflicting evidence regarding the source of the threatening message, local police were unable to file charges against any specific individual or arrest anyone. The shooting on Wednesday at Apalachee High School is the latest case of mass shootings in American high schools. Among the deadliest school shootings in recent years are those in Newton, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida, and Uvalde, Texas. According to statistics jointly compiled by the Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University, the shooting at Apalachee High School is the 30th mass shooting in the U.S. since the beginning of this calendar year. In these shootings, at least 127 people have been killed. Research organizations and the FBI define a mass shooting as an event where the number of victims is at least four, excluding the shooter, within a 24-hour period.
