China Defends Its Position in Russia's War Against Ukraine in Response to NATO Criticism

As the NATO summit continues in Washington, D.C., China claimed that the organization is "seeking security at the expense of others." On Thursday, July 21, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry reacted to the Washington summit's criticism of NATO, urging it not to create "chaos" in Asia. According to the Associated Press, this stance reflects China's determination to oppose the strengthening of relations between NATO members and Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines. Lin Jian, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, called the NATO summit's designation of China as a "crucial enabler" of Russia's war against Ukraine "unreasonable," claiming it has "sinister motives." He stated that China holds a fair and objective position regarding the Ukraine issue. China has distanced itself from the U.S. and its European allies over the Ukraine war, refraining from condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine or even labeling it as aggression. China's trade with Russia has increased since the invasion, partially offsetting the impact of Western sanctions on Moscow. NATO leaders, in a statement released at the Washington summit, said that China has become a factor in the war through its "unlimited partnership" with Russia and extensive support for its defense industrial base. More than three years into the war in Ukraine, NATO plans to deepen its relations with four partner countries in the Indo-Pacific, which, although not part of this military alliance, are becoming increasingly important due to closer ties between Russia and China to counter the U.S. and the support of both Koreas for opposing parties in the European conflict.
