China Limits Trade with North Korea in Line with UN Sanctions

On Friday, China announced that it has restricted the export of key petroleum products to North Korea in accordance with United Nations Security Council sanctions against the country. These sanctions are among the most critical components of the recent Security Council measures. According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the country will impose limitations on the export of crude oil and refined petroleum products to North Korea. Additionally, the sale of steel, machinery, and industrial vehicles to North Korea has been prohibited. The Ministry of Commerce also stated that the import of food products, machinery, and some other goods from North Korea will be banned. China is considered North Korea's only trading partner in the energy supply and other commercial areas. The implementation of these sanctions will exert the real pressure anticipated in the UN sanctions against North Korea. North Korea was sanctioned by the Security Council due to its ballistic missile activities and nuclear warhead tests in September and November of the previous year. Although China is a diplomatic supporter of North Korea, it has agreed to sanction resolutions in the Security Council due to Pyongyang's dangerous behavior. Chinese leaders had previously not supported U.S. requests for restrictions on oil trade with North Korea, but they are now pursuing the implementation of these measures. Analysts say that North Korea's need for oil imports from China is a powerful economic leverage that can be used against Pyongyang. Meanwhile, Chinese leaders have warned that strict measures against North Korea could destabilize the North Korean government or lead to a large number of North Korean refugees heading to China. According to the latest UN Security Council sanctions, Chinese companies are allowed to export up to four million barrels of crude oil and 500,000 barrels of refined petroleum products to North Korea annually. These companies are also prohibited from any dealings with companies related to military and weaponry products from North Korea. North Korea claims that the sanctions and military exercises by the United States and its regional allies are aimed at overthrowing the ruling regime and violating its territorial integrity. Washington and its allies argue that the exercises are defensive in nature and conducted to prepare for military threats from Pyongyang. The U.S. State Department has emphasized that it continues to seek a diplomatic solution to end North Korea's nuclear military activities. In this context, Trump has described China's cooperation with North Korea in the oil sector as 'disappointing.'
