China: North Korea Must Adhere to Its Nuclear Disarmament Commitments

Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, has warned North Korea to adhere to its commitments for nuclear disarmament and to refrain from actions that would worsen the situation. According to a report by Reuters on Friday, January 8, Wang Yi also stated that Beijing has no authority to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue. China is North Korea's largest political and economic ally, although relations between the two countries have not been as warm in recent years. John Kerry, the U.S. Secretary of State, has also called for more action from Beijing to counter North Korea's nuclear tests during a call with his Chinese counterpart. North Korea, one of the most closed and isolated governments in the world, announced this week that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. In response, the United States stated that initial assessments do not align with North Korea's claim, although the U.S. needs time for further evaluations. Members of the United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned North Korea's recent test and agreed on new actions against Pyongyang. North Korea has been under severe international sanctions for years due to its nuclear weapons tests. Following the recent test, tensions at the border between North and South Korea have also increased, with both sides resuming propaganda broadcasts against each other.
